FIRE Calculator: find your financial independence number

Find your financial independence number

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is about building enough wealth so you are not dependent on a regular paycheck for your lifestyle. It does not always mean stopping work completely — for many, FIRE means freedom to choose how they spend their time and what kind of work they do.

A FIRE Calculator estimates how much money you need to become financially independent and whether your current savings and investments are on track.

What is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. You build a large enough investment corpus so future expenses can be managed through investments without depending fully on salary or business income.

Your FIRE number is the total corpus needed to retire comfortably while maintaining your desired lifestyle.

Example: If annual expenses after retirement are ₹24,00,000 and you follow a 3% safe withdrawal rate:

FIRE Number = ₹24,00,000 ÷ 3% = ₹8 crore (approx.)

Why is FIRE planning important?

FIRE planning helps you answer questions like:

  • How much money do I need to become financially independent?
  • Am I saving enough every month?
  • At what age can I realistically retire?
  • Will my current investments be enough?
  • How much more do I need to invest?
  • How will inflation affect my retirement lifestyle?

Without a clear number, retirement can feel vague. A FIRE Calculator converts that into a measurable target.

Benefits of using a FIRE Calculator

  • FIRE number: Approximate corpus needed based on future expenses, inflation, and safe withdrawal rate.
  • Progress tracking: Compare projected corpus with your FIRE number and see the gap.
  • Monthly investment planning: Estimate how much to invest each month to reach your target.
  • Inflation adjustment:Projects future expenses from today's lifestyle costs.
  • Personalized inputs: Uses age, corpus, returns, investments, and withdrawal assumptions.

FIRE calculator formulae

  • Years Left for FIRE = Target Retirement Age − Current Age
  • Retirement Duration = Life Expectancy − Target Retirement Age
  • Annual Expense at Retirement = Current Monthly Expense × 12 × (1 + Inflation)Years Left
  • FIRE Number = Annual Expense at Retirement ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate
  • Projected Corpus = Future Value of Current Corpus + Future Value of Monthly Investments
  • FIRE Gap = FIRE Number − Projected Corpus at Retirement
  • FIRE Progress % = min((Projected Corpus ÷ FIRE Number) × 100, 100)
  • Annual Withdrawal = FIRE Number × Safe Withdrawal Rate
  • Monthly Withdrawal = Annual Withdrawal ÷ 12

Default assumptions for India: Inflation 6%, expected return before retirement 10%, after retirement 7%, safe withdrawal rate 3%, life expectancy 85 years.

Illustrative only. The FIRE number divides your inflation-adjusted yearly expenses by the safe withdrawal rate. Returns, inflation and expenses are assumptions; actual mutual fund returns vary with market conditions.
